Moving From Raleigh
Helping Your Children Move

kids Moving Kids and Moving Helping Kids Move

Whether you move from Raleigh to another state or are moving across town be sure to pay special attention to the kids. Moving can be an exciting time and a scary time. Planning ahead to help kids through this transition is very important.

There a many fun things you can do to help children get ready to move to a new place.

1. If possible get pictures and videos of their new home and own new room. Ask them where they want to put their bed and other questions specific to their "stuff."

2. Help them make a scrap book of friends and their favorite kids places in Raleigh.

3. Pack your kids things last so they will be first off the moving truck. Let the kids decorate their packing boxes. Make sure that they know you are not giving away their things.

4. On arrival unpack their boxes first so they can see their treasures then, let them play with the boxes while you're unpacking the rest.

5. Children may enjoy having a map book where they can follow their drive or flight to their new home and collect postcards along the way.

6. If your Raleigh move is across town, take the children to explore the new house and play in their new neighborhood.

7. Kids may be scared that they will be forgotten by their friends. Reassure them that they can keep in touch by calling, texting, email, and Skype.

8. Start a Kids Scrap Book with them for their new home. Begin taking pictures for it when you arrive. Include a Special Diary for them of "My first..."

9. Help make your children's move to a new school easier by taking them to visit it before their first day. That way when the first school day arrives it is not a strange place to them. Take pictures of their new school to send to their friends back home.

10. Invite your new neighbors and their children over for a "packing box picnic" so all the children can meet.

11. Show your children fun things to do when they get to their new home like: the zoo, new parks, kid friendly restaurants, and new local attractions.

12. Let them choose a new favorite restaurant for the family. This will help them feel more in control of their new world.

13. Remember, even if you only lived in your Raleigh home for only a few years, to a young child it is nearly their entire lifetime!

Moving and packing can be a very busy time but remember to take a break now and then to hold or play with your children. They will need you close as their worlds change.
