Historic Oakwood is one of the best known historical neighborhoods in Raleigh. The Oakwood area began its development in the 1870's. The development grew slowly with most homes being built between 1870 and 1930.
Oakwood was originally home to the city's middle class business owners and politicians who worked in downtown Raleigh and could walk home to Oakwood in the evenings.
