Raleigh Entertainment Bennett Place - 919-383-4345
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
Bennett Place is a NC Historic Park and great site for history buffs. It's the location of Gen. Johnston's surrender to Gen. Sherman - which it turns out, was bigger than Appomattox.
The surrender at Bennett Farm was largest surrender of Confederate soldiers in the Civil War, All the Southern armies in the North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida totalling 89,270 were surrendered.
The surrender took place on April 26, 1865 - seventeen days after Lee's surrender to Grant.
Apparently this simple farmhouse - was just that - a simple farmhouse situated between Confederate Gen. Johnston's headquarters in Greensboro, and Union Gen. Sherman's headquarters in Raleigh. It was the closest and most convenient place for privacy.
James and Nancy Bennitt (Bennitt is the correct spelling of the family name) were just Southern farmers. They suffered during the war and lost three sons in the fighting. The Bennetts apparently never recovered from the war, and moved Durham in 1880 after James died.
The Bennett Farm site was rebuilt and restored around 1960 by local preservationists. It was later turned over to the State of North Carolina and made a state historic site.
There's a small museum and introductory movie, reconstructed home of the Bennett family - a simple farmhouse, kitchen, smokehouse and garden.
Every year in April costumed re-enactors produce a surrender program.
As a side note, 26 years later Gen. Johnston died of pneumonia after standing hatless in a cold rain at Gen. Sherman's funeral.
Other Raleigh historic sites we like to recommend are Mordecai Historic Park , Duke Homestead , and Tobacco Farm Life Museum.
