Raleigh Entertainment The Carolina Theatre - 919-560-3030
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
The Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham is a classic example of an old-school theater. The Carolina is an historic theater and has an incredible film repertoire and also brings in smaller fascinating performances.
The films are primarily art/independent and foreign flicks and they also have some low-brow horror and a smattering of sci-if. They show the great older films that are very hard to find.
The Carolina Theatre is where the film festivals come and the people who love them show up. The Full-Frame Documentary Festival, the Gay & Lesbian Film Fest, and the Nevermore Fest are all hosted by the Carolina Theatre.
The film goers at the Carolina (as opposed movie-goers elsewhere) are an incredible collection of intellectual and interesting people that can carry on great conversations that are usually steeped in thought and substance.
Going to the Carolina Theatre makes me want to be very smart and worldly - in a bygone sort of way. The old movie memorabilia, wooden armrests, historic feel, and old popcorn machine make me want to light up my Pal Mall in my cigarette holder, pretend to smoke and look so very Bacallish, dah-ling! The concession stands serve beer and wine which supports my fantasy - God bless you.
The Carolina is fun and has character. It is a civilized way to watch a movie.
If you are interested in independent films, and the culture surrounding them, the Carolina Theatre is the place you should go.
Other Raleigh Entertainment we like to recommend are Koka Booth Amphitheatre , Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts , and Raleigh Convention Center.
