Raleigh Entertainment Duke Homestead - 919-477-5498
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
Duke Homestead is a 'living museum' that portrays the Duke family and the development of their tobacco dominance. Tobacco has always been of economic importance to North Carolina. Washington Duke, an Orange County farmer, is the person piracy responsible for turning our area into a world-wide tobacco empire.
The Duke Homestead is more interesting that I thought it would be. On the tour, you see the Duke's restored home, an early factory, a curing barn, and a packhouse.
There's a bit of irony here. You tour a small log structure that was Duke's first factory. Here the processed smoking tobacco was labeled. It was labeled with hand-lettered tags saying "Pro Bono Publico," a Latin phrase meaning "for the public good."
This is an authentic "living museum of tobacco history." It shows the early farming techniques and manufacturing processes of tobacco. They offer a guided tour that's very informative and you'll get more information than just walking around on your own.
There's also a tobacco museum that has information of farming tobacco, tobacco products, and old advertisements that seem very foreign given today's outlook. They also have the world's largest spittoon collection.
Tobacco and North Carolina have walked hand-in-hand for a long time. It's very interesting to review that history.
Other Raleigh historic sites we like to recommend are Mordecai Historic Park , Bennett Place, and Tobacco Farm Life Museum.
