The North Carolina Botanical Garden is part of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The focus of the Garden is the native plant life of the Carolinas.

They have wetland plants and medicinal plants - even carnivorous plants - which are pretty cool. Most of the garden is arranged in a very naturalized manner. There are strategically placed benches throughout - a very nice and serene touch.

It isn't really a formal looking garden. It is more about education than large displays of flowers. There are different plants from different habitats so you see the plants in their natural setting.

There is also a great eclectic array of art from local artists placed throughout the gardens and it is all for sale.

The Botanical Garden is free and you can pick up some very good information here. They also have a little shop area where you can buy plants for your own garden.

Driving Directions: From I-40 W take Exit 273A, and turn onto Hwy 54 West toward Chapel Hill. Go 2.9 miles to the right-hand ramp to Fordham Blvd. SOUTH (US 15-501S/NC 54W). Turn Right onto Fordham Blvd. (traffic light). Turn Left at the traffic light at Old Mason Farm Road. Parking lot entrance is almost immediately on your RIGHT, just past the sign (there is an overflow lot as well). Follow signs for walking to the Display Gardens & Totten Center and the Nature Trails.
