Raleigh Recreation Eno River State Park (919) 383-1686
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
Eno River State Park is located about six miles north of downtown Durham.
The Eno River flows from northwest Orange County, continues east for about 33 miles, then merges with the Little and Flat Rivers, to become the Neuse River (the 2nd largest river in NC) which flows into Falls Lake.
The park has of nearly 2700 acres of wilderness and around 25 miles of hiking trails. You can pick and choose as far as the difficulty level of the trails. There are leisurely ones up through ones designed for the hardy hiker.
The Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail has great Eno River Hiking Trail Maps Eno River Trail Maps.
There are enough trails that you don't have to go the same way each time and can pick a variety of scenery. Do be careful of the poison ivy. I got a nasty case of it last year - "Leaves of three, beware of me", is now burned into my brain.
It's a very nice park and we have gone there just splash around on a hot day and put our feet in the river. The water is clear and nice and cool. There are plenty of swimming holes with kids of all ages in there enjoying themselves.
There's any kind of camping you want from primitive, to family, to group camping. The park has 11 backcountry camp sites.
You can also go canoeing - classes I, II, and III rapids - the park officials will fill you as to access points for the different levels.
If you are into bird watching - people have told us, that 62 species of birds nest in the Eno State Park. I have no idea who counted them but that's what "they say."
Fishing is great there - just drop your line in from the banks and you are good to go. The river is home to bass, bluegill, chain pickerel, crappie, and bullhead. Make sure that you have fishing licenses for anyone over 15 years old.
One of the state's top outdoor festivals happens at the Eno on July 4th weekend - great time for all! The Eno River Festival
