Raleigh Recreation William B. Umstead State Park (919) 571-4170
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
Umstead Park Is a 5,579-acre forested park sitting in the northwest area of Raleigh and surrounded by Raleigh/Cary/RTP/Durham. It is really fantastic - especially considering it is tucked into such urban areas.
There are entrances from both Interstate 40 and US 70. (We always use the US 70 (Glenwood Entrance). The Umstead has lots of hiking trails or you can boat and fish in designated parts of the park.
The trails are easy to moderate and they have all different lengths. For an easy but a hike I recommend the Company Mill Trail (5.8 miles). It runs along the Sycamore Creek and goes through some very pretty scenic areas.
The shorter trails are very nice also and you will usually see something interesting along the way. There are a couple of family cemeteries you can see from the trails. I'm not sure what the story is with them but it does add an element of curiosity.
This is a popular place and you will usually run into other park enthusiasts - joggers, bikers, horse riders, hikers, campers. It can get crowded on the weekends but it is still well worth it.
I have hiked out there in January after one of our rare snowfalls. It was FANTASTIC! It seemed totally quiet and empty - not a soul but me. I'm sure there were others but it seemed like I had it to myself.
We highly recommend this park for some alone time or with the family. It is beautiful in all of the seasons and each one offers something new to see. It is free - which makes it even better.
