Big Ed's at City Market in downtown Raleigh is THE place to go in Raleigh for a "good old Southern breakfast." It's real good, it's real friendly, it's real greasy, it's a ton of food, and it's all southern.
Biscuits - oh my goodness! Biscuits are just like the ones grandma wished she could make. If you don't like biscuits - you will like these - I swear. Ask for them to be grilled. When they come - grab the bottle of squeeze molasses that is on every table - lather 'em up with traditional southern margarine, take a bite and float up to heaven.
Next thing to get is ONE pancake - yup just one! It will be the biggest pancake you'll ever see - remember old records - that big and about four times as fat!
The atmosphere at Big Ed's is awesomely cool - southern gone rabid. There are all kinds of weird stuff hanging from the ceiling - shovels, bicycles, pitch forks, pails, dried flowers, signs, little hay bales, and stuff I don't even want to know what it is. The tables all have checkered table cloths and the wait staff is southern and southern friendly.
If you go on Friday or Saturday - expect to wait. The place will be absolutely packed. But, the good side to that is there will be some band playing on the sidewalk to help pass the time.
Big Ed's is NOT open on Sunday so don't plan brunch. The other days it opens at 7:00 a.m.
We'll see ya there - we eat there as often as our arteries can stand it!
