Raleigh Restaurant The Pit - 919-890-4500
Description, Map, Review & Recommendations
The Pit is one of Raleigh most famous Barbecue spots. It's famous for a reason - it is flat out good 'cue!
Raleigh Restaurants are known for great food - but this one takes it home. First off it is not your typical Raleigh BBQ Restaurant. This is a bit more of an upscale trendy barbecue restaurant where you get great Carolina comfort food and dress to impress.
If you have out of town guests who need an introduction Eastern Carolina BBQ, you have to take them to the Pit ( Eastern BBQ is vinegar based - and Western is tomato based).
A great way to start out is with either (or both) sweet potato cornbread with maple butter which is always moist and yummy or the Pimento Cheese Dip which sounds weird but is oh so good.
I recommend the beef brisket and the Carolina style ribs. Both are "melt in your mouth" and absolutely delicious.
If you have friends who are vegetarians and usually just watch you as you eat meat - bring them here. The Pit has a fantastic (so I am told) BBQ tofu. "They" say it tastes like chicken - which I admit confuses me coming from the mouth of a vegetarian.
For sides I always go for one of the vegetable casseroles. The broccoli and cauliflower and the green bean casserole are both fantastic. They, like everything at The Pit, is made fresh - no canned veggies here.
If you have the sharing type of friends, order a bunch of the sides so you can taste everything. Some great ones are the collard greens, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, and mac and cheese.
The servings are huge so try not to fill up on the hot buttery hush puppies - you will want to!
You will not have room for dessert - but go for the banana pudding anyway. It is like our moms used to make. It takes me back to that great time in life when banana pudding was the greatest treat on the planet.
There's usually a wait, so be sure you make a reservation. Weekends are always packed. If you have to wait, it's no big deal because the bar is great. It has an extensive wine list and even sangria made from locally-grown muscadine grapes. They also have an impressive whiskey selection along with some good microbrews.
For Carolina BBQ - it's The Pit!
Other Raleigh Restaurants we like include Herons at the Umstead, The Angus Barn near the airport, and Sitti downtown.
